Castlewood State Park

On 2/28/2004 I visited Castlewood State Park for the first time. The park offers camping, biking and hiking by the Meramec river.

What I wanted to see first was the bluff overlook of the Meramec. The trail climbs 250 feet to the top of the bluffs. Going up...

A fallen tree along the trail.

Mushrooms.

Still going up...

Here we go. That's what I was looking for. It bet it even looks better in the summer when everything is green.

Along the river are railroad tracks. Union Pacific IIRC.

Going back down. Moss.

Trees.

The roots of a couple of trees.

Next stop was to see the river up close. The trail map says its around here somewheres...

Ah - there it is.

Wait... That's a beach.

Yeah, its really beach sand.

It even has shells on it.

Looks like even a couple patches of snow left in the shadows, though I haven't seen any elsewhere for quite a few days.

Up close, the water is very clear.

Very quiet and peaceful - just hear the occasional bird. Its like people never had been here.

Er... I guess there have been people after all.

Sand ripples.

Yep, its scenic here.

The trail continues along the river. Close up its clear, but in the right light its very green.

A fallen tree along the trail.

I really do need to come back when there are some leaves on things.

Balls!

More mushrooms.

Bark.
