County Fairs

On 7/3/2004 Jill and I wandered 400 miles to Illinois on a day of county fairs.

An abortive attempt to locate the giant catsup bottle in Collinsville led to the covered bridge in Glen Carbon, IL.

This is how I summarize Illinois. "Road ends. Cornfield." If you aren't familiar with IL, my reasoning behind this will become clear.

In Mulberry Grove, the Mulberry Grove Community Unit. I don't think I've ever seen a community unit before.

Yes, its across the street from a cornfield, but that should just go without saying as its in Illinois. Everything is across the street from a cornfield.

Giant cross at Effingham - an I-70 landmark. Other than the new prison there isn't much beyond, yes, corn.

The plan for the day was the Jasper County Fair in Newton. Here's the 4-H building there.

We got there a bit after noon and they were in the middle of harness racing.

The fair proper was on the other side of the grandstand. Even the Jasper County Republicans had a booth. A gyro was our lunch, btw.

On the drive to Newton rain was sporadic - not long after we arrived, harder rain reached Newton. The announcer's booth is surrounded by gray sky.

Amanda Hickox, the Jasper County Fair Queen in her crown and sash. Note how wet the track is behind her.

The car and gate that drives along and starts the race. As it was getting difficult to drive, the rest of the races were postponed until tomorrow. As yesterday also was rainy and some races postponed to today, over two dozen races will have to be held on Sunday.

The rain came and went. Here it is coming back.

As it was too wet to race, it was also too wet to do anything else, so all of the rides and booths were empty.
