Touring Hannibal

There are a couple of high spots in Hannibal with nice views. Here's one. Bubba's is in the center of the second pic - yes, its near enough to the river to be flooded now and then - the last bad one was 2001. Note in the same pic the white lighthouse near the top of the hill.

We toured the Rockcliffe Mansion - built 1900 it was said to be the nicest river house in Missouri. Unfortunately no pictures are allowed inside.

The foot of Cardiff Hill and the Tom and Huck statues.

The staircase up the hill leads to the white lighthouse.

Partway up you know you are in Hannibal.

Almost there - the last staircase. Jill counted 243 steps to the top. Its a ways up.

Nice view up top - can even see a train and a barge.

The lighthouse.

Back down, and the statues again.

A little square has a number of buildings from Mark Twain's life. The Haunted House on Hill Street.

Becky Thatcher house - home of Laura Hawkins who the character of Becky Thatcher was based on.

Mark Twain's father's law office.

Tom Sawyer's fence.

Pilaster House/Grant's Drug Store - the Clemens family lived here for a while, and Twain's father died here.

Mark Twain boyhood home.

Of course, they play up Mark Twain everwhere. Here's a diner just off the square.

You know, that lighthouse is pretty high up.

We did some wandering, and asked a native, but found the Mount Olivet cemetery (its off of T outside of downtown). The man Injun Joe was based on is buried here.
