As we were heading to southern IL for the LGC, Jill suggested we stop
by southern MO to see Grand Tower Rock - she had been there before but I had
not. Its a very big rock near the Missouri shore in the Mississippi.
Those plants on top? Fully grown trees. Its a big rock.
When the river is low you can walk over to it and climb up those shelves.
Jill (in the orange coat) did it a while back when it was possible.
It really is much bigger than it seems.
The water forms a whirlpool as it is forced between the rock and the
shore.
Lewis and Clark were here. They were everywhere.
Jill took a picture of me taking a picture of the sign.
Nearby is a bridge for a pipe.
The road to the rock is gravel and crosses a railroad track.
While we were there a train passed by.
Notice my tires - gravel roads are dusty.
On a rock nearby were these railroad spikes.
Another overlook was up that road over the tracks again.
Its still big even from up above.
There was a wooden balcony where you could stand - yes, it really
is up above.
