Montauk Redux

On 8/7/04 Jill and I returned to Montauk State Park to see what it looked like when it wasn't drenched by rain, plus continued down the Current River in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways / Mark Twain National Forest region of Missouri, a round trip of 625 miles - the longest of our day trips to date. Due to technical difficulties most images in this set were taken with Jill's camera rather than my own.

The drive to central MO took us through a number of interesting places. In the continuing water tower series, the hot and cold water towers of St. Clair.

We passed a VFW with a tank outside. I had to look.

We once again passed through Licking. From Jill: Jill's watch - "It takes a licking but keeps on ticking."

Licking's water tower is a baseball.

Licking livestock is apparently legal in this part of the state.

Apparently licking is newsworthy.

Back to Montauk.

Montauk contains a spring which is the head of the Current River. As the water comes to the surface from below ground its relatively cold. Yes, the water is blue in quantity, but clear close up.

It has fish in it.

It didn't visually seem to be producing that much water, but the rivulets away from the spring were moving fast.

Leaving Montauk and continuing on, we passed through Joy. It was fleeting.

We saw one road that led over a wash to a cemetery so we went to go look. The cemetery was well taken care of, but the road didn't seem to be often travelled.

Continuing on, the road to Round Spring is also unpaved. When the state says they stop maintenance, they mean it.

Round Spring is relatively round, and also very blue.

Round Spring offered another Logan's Run moment.

There is a cave at Round Spring, but it was closed by the time we arrived.

Going further down the Current River, Jacks Fork joins it at Two Rivers. We weren't the only ones there.
