Nov 30 - More Williamstown

Driving and the Pass

After watching the robots, Jim drove me around the vicinity. Nice view, even though it was overcast. This is in Hancock, MA driving South on MA 43.

Here is Jiminy Peak with ski trails. Lots of skiing in that part of the world.

Its pretty rural too.

Interesting how there isn't any snow at the level of the road, but the higher you go the whiter it gets.

We passed through Berlin North on NY 22, the nearest town to the Murphys, and saw Plank Road, the road that curves up the mountain toward their house, but didn't have time to stop.

A neat thing to see was a mountain pass - Petersburgh Pass on NY 2 East (turning into MA 2 East at the top). As we approached the mountain the transition from green to white is more pronounced.

Not too bad yet, but some snow.

Higher... More snow...

Higher still... Yet more snow... Its getting grayer too...

We are there. There is a place by the side of the road where you can park your car and walk around. There were two or three inches of snow on the ground here. Its an elevation of 2090 ft and its also inside the cloud layer. Neat, yes?

Jim, walking over to an information kiosk on the other side of the stopping area. It was a pretty good sized stopping area.

Its neat to be in a cloud. Visibility just goes to zero.

The cloud was everywhere...

For the adventurous, a trail starts here up the mountain. The sign states "Motorized Vehicles Prohibited" beyond that point.

What the information kiosk says - 5 Rules of Survival. Jim points out that rule 2 should really read "If you want to survive don't bring a canoe to a mountain that doesn't have any water on it."

Looking back at Jim's car from the kiosk. Yes, its a big stopping area. Big enough to see cloud between the kiosk and car.

The terrain near the kiosk. Pretty.

Across the pass and back down the mountain going North on US 7, now back in Williamstown. Yep, no snow.
